I vowed I’d never do it….never!! never!! never!! No way Jose would I crochet a GRANNY SQUARE!!!! It just seemed too, um, grannyish! I realized I was granny-prejudiced but I get teased enough about my "habit" (read obsession) and crochet already suffers from an (undeserved) reptuation of being a bit "boxy, boring and dowdy" without me contributing to it. Right? (btw I just discovered a fantastic blog, the Crochet Liberation Front by a "fearless leader" fighting to change that image).
Then I discovered the beautiful blog Le Monde de Sucrette. Angie, the blog’s author is so lovely and welcoming and has a writing style that makes you feel as if the two of you were having a chat over coffee… …but under that kindly exterior lurks a secret granny pusher!!! She proposed a giant granny square challenge….
"Crochet and crochet and crochet a very big and colorful granny square… as big as you can"
I resisted…..NEVER!!!! but Angie’s enthusiasm was infectious….. NEVER!!! more and more lovely ladies were enthusiastically signing up…from all over the world (England, France, USA, Argentina, South Africa, Australia, Holland, Chile, Egypt, Germany….)! NEVER!!! They were having fun!! Never??
….Resistance, it quickly became apparent, was futile… Not wanting to miss a party, I considered a compromise. Perhaps I could do a GLAMOROUS GRANNY? An UN Granny? A sparkly, fluffy rock’n’roll creation. I thought I’d just try a few rounds, you know, to prove that I hated it! And that was it...
GAME OVER
The addictive vortex that is the giant granny square challenge had SUCKED ME IN!! and it is FUN!!! I’m meeting people from all over the world and touring their blogs (incredible treasure troves of creativity) and they are visiting mine.
Angie set up a Flickr group so we can post our granny growth pictures! and you know what? There are lots of beautiful granny squares with wonderful color combinations. It was unfair of me to have been so negative!!
So, after breaking my “never ever, EVER will I crochet a granny square” rule, I set another:
"I will not buy any more yarn to make this granny – No way, no how, I self-impose a ban on trips to Michaels, Joanns or any other evil center of all things yarn related….."
So that went well!! (I did own a few of these already....honest!)
Glamorous Granny started off innocently enough…..
...and she kept on growing!!!...
I'm not sure when she will stop!!
My granny turned into a wool eating monster!!!
At last count there were 39 ladies around the globe making giant grannies!!
I kind of think my granny rocks! Even though she does eat too much wool!!
I made one last rule:
"Don’t knock it til you try it!"
I’ve got my next 2 grannies planned already!!
